Our rehabilitation programs

We have two major programs:

Orthopaedic following:

  • Total hip replacements and revisions
  • Surgery for fractured hip
  • Total knee replacements and revisions
  • Other orthopaedic surgery
  • Multi-trauma, including fractures

Musculoskeletal following:

  • Acute Rheumatoid Arthritis
  • Severe soft tissue injury or disease
  • Complications of advanced degenerative joint disease.

Our team members include doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and social workers. They design and implement programs to enable patients to achieve the higher level of independence in both the hospital setting and on return to home, work and leisure pursuits.

Weekly Case Conferences of Specialists, Nursing and Rehabilitation staff are conducted to assess each patient's program and progress. Family conferences are available by arrangement.

Occupational Therapy
Occupational Therapy programs develop graded independence of an individual's functioning.

Assessment of the individual's level of function enables the therapist to design tasks with the goal of helping individuals to become increasingly independent.

For those patients of working age, assessments are made of physical capabilities and ability to work.

Having identified needed skills these become the priority of treatment.

Physiotherapy
Physiotherapists design specific programs aimed at achieving the highest levels of physical functioning. Programs are developed to suit the needs of each patient. This includes assessment and treatment aimed at improving muscle strength, joint range, body balance, posture and independence in activities of daily living. Patients are under continual supervision and review.

Social work
A social worker is available to every rehabilitation patient. Activities include these professionals as part of the multidisciplinary team offering:

  • Rehabilitation counselling
  • Individual counselling
  • Family therapy
  • Psycho-social assessment

Resources and information are provided to assist patients and their families to make informed decisions regarding their future care, rehabilitation and other needs.

On discharge, referrals are made where necessary, to appropriate community services, follow-up support and counselling services.

Hydrotherapy
Warm water exercises may be employed to strengthen the muscles and improve balance and gait. Our hydrotherapy pool includes the benefit of a spa, allowing exercises to be carried out whilst walking against jets of water. The pool is designed to allow easy access by means of a gentle slope into the water. Exercises are supervised by a physiotherapist at all times.
